Photo Competition for August 2011

Harold Eugene EdgertonOn Thursday, August 18th at 7:30pm we’ll be having our photographic competition for the month. You can find all the rules for the competition by clicking on the “Competition Rules” link in the top left had corner of our website.

The themes for the months of 2011 are the photographers listed, and the sub-theme is the direction you need to go in with the image you create. For the months that have two photographers listed, you must only choose one of the photographers (your choice) and go in the direction of the sub-theme. Before creating your photograph, please research the photographer and their many photographs for your inspiration.

Harold Eugene Edgerton

Harold Eugene “Doc” Edgerton was a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is largely credited with transforming the stroboscope from an obscure laboratory instrument into a common device.

The selected winning photograph for each monthly competition will be framed by Frame Gallery and will then be displayed in UNCOMMON Gallery for a month.

Studio Seminar with Photographer & Lighting Guru Andre Rowe.

Studione1 is a 10,000 square feet, gorgeous state-of-the-art full service still and motion picture studio located in Fort Lauderdale. They offer the latest technology and all the professional amenities that high-end clients expect to find in the industry. This is a home base, a center of activity for imagination, creativity and development.

Andre Rowe, commercial photographer, guru of indoor and outdoor lighting, and manager of Studione1 will be providing a straightforward introduction to the inner layout of a photo studio, the lighting equipment, and the things you most need to know about using a studio. With audience participation Andre will guide you through quick and easy lighting setups the can be applied anywhere, including outdoors!

We will be meeting at Studione1 at 7:30 but come a little early so we can get started on time… The address for this event is listed below. Make sure to enter through the rear or the building.

Second Meeting in December

On Thursday December 20th at 7pm we will be having our photographic competition for the month. The theme for the month of December is “Santa”. If you are using the printing services of Dale Laboratories you can print as large as 11X14 or 12X18 depending on the aspect ratio you shot the photo in or had to crop to. The smallest photo allowed is 8X10 and all photos must be centered mounted on a 16X20 black matte board. November’s Photo Competition

On Thursday November 15th at 7pm we will be having our photographic competition for the month. The theme for the month of November is “A Smile is Worth a Thousand Words”. If you are using the printing services of Dale Laboratories you can print as large as 11X14 or 12X18 depending on the aspect ratio you shot the photo in or had to crop to. The smallest photo allowed is 8X10 and all photos must be centered mounted on a 16X20 black matte board. October Photo Competition & Photoshop Class

On Thursday October 18th at 7pm we will be having our photographic competition for the month. The theme for the month of October is “Animalia”. If you are using the printing services of Dale Laboratories you can print as large as 11X14 or 12X18 depending on the aspect ratio you shot the photo in or had to crop to. The smallest photo allowed is 8X10 and all photos must be centered mounted on a 16X20 black matte board. After the competition ends, Steve Wilkinson will be giving a class in Adobe Photoshop basics. This class will be tailored to your needs per request. Please bring in any photos you may want to work with on CD or thumb drive. This class is for paid members only.

Nikon Seminar

On Thursday August 2nd at 7pm Nikon Field Engineer Terrence Campbell will be coming to the club to discuss all things Nikon. More specifically Terrence will be discussing Nikon as a corporate entity, Nikon schools and events, Nikon catching up in the camera industry, as well as Nikon’s competition. He will also be answering questions about camera performance and functions and anything else you can think to ask. Club members and non-members alike are welcome. You may also bring along anyone you think may be interested in this event.

Outdoor & Digital Photo Seminar

On Saturday August 4th and Sunday August 5th there will be an Outdoor & Digital Photo Seminar at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel in Miami. Many of the South Florida Camera Club’s members will be attending this event and we would like everyone that is interested to attend with us. Gallery Night

On August 10th from 6pm till 11pm UNCOMMON Gallery will be having their monthly gallery night Party. This will be a great opportunity for those of you that have not seen Jessica Savidge’s winning photograph to view it. It is also a great opportunity to mingle with other artists in the community, view art & photography, listen to music, and consume wine, munchies and lots more. On Thursday August 16th at 7pm we will be having our photographic competition for the month of August. The theme for the month of August is “Summer”. At the last competition some members expressed the need for relaxing the rule of 2 inches from the edge of the 16X20 black matte board to 1 inch from the edge. If you are using the printing services of Dale Laboratories this will allow you to print as large as 11X14 or 12X18 depending on the aspect ratio you shot the photo in or had to crop to. The smallest photo allowed is still 8X10 and all photos must be centered mounted on a 16X20 black matte board.
