SFCC News for 24-August-2008

August 24th, 2008

August’s Photographic Competition Winners
Joe McBroom is back with a big first place win in the open themed photo competition for August. Joe’s photo entitled “Pelican Grand” is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) of a sunrise over the pool and ocean behind the Pelican Grand Hotel in Fort Lauderdale.  Coming in Second was Rolfe Ross with his beautiful B&W photograph entitled “Central Park”. Rolfe doesn’t remember the name of the building he took the photograph in, so if it looks familiar to you please let us know.  We had a tie for third place between Omar with his photograph entitled “Alum Cave Bluff” taken in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Donia Martin with her photograph entitled “Recycle” of a bundle of crushed aluminum cans at a recycling center.

Joe McBroom is now eligible to win a brand new Nikon D300 or Canon 50D at the end of the year competition for “Best Photograph of the Year”. His photograph is being framed by Frame Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, and will hang in UNCOMMON Gallery throughout the month of August. Make sure to attend the Gallery Night Party on Friday, September 12th to see Joe’s print is all its glory.

Travel Logs
Our travel log presenters for August were Jack Levy and Jessica Savidge. Jack’s travel log was from his trip to San Francisco and Jessica presented a travel log from her Mediterranean Cruise through Greece, Monaco, Turkey and Italy with her Cousin. If you’re interested in presenting a slide show of one of your travels, please contact Elaine Fitzgerald prior to the second meeting of the month. Elaine can be reached at 954-956-8999.

Canon 50D
Canon recently announced the new Canon 50D to their lineup of digital SLRs. Because of this upgrade from the Canon 40D, South Florida Camera Club will now be offering the 50D as an option instead of the 40D for the end of the year prize. I think its unlikely Nikon will be upgrading the D300 before the prize giveaway for “Best Photo of the Year”, so that option will likely stay the same. I’m sure all you Canon shooters are happy to see this new camera, and I for one am looking forward to seeing what else is announced before Photokina.

Flickr
Many of us are using Flickr for an online photography community and to show off our photos. I highly recommend using Flickr as your online gallery and linking to it from this site. I also created a South Florida Camera Club group within Flickr for club members. This will be a lot of fun for us to see what everyone is doing and will also allow us to communicate in the forum. Please join the group if you haven’t already and check out Flickr if you haven’t yet. You can check out my gallery to see how it looks.

Podcast of the Month (September)
A very inspirational and informative podcast I’ve been listening to lately is put out by Brooks Jensen whom also happens to be the publisher of LensWork Magazine. Most of his podcast are between five and ten minutes in length, so I end up listening to a few of the hundreds he has posted online while I drive to work. Brooks Jensen does one series of podcast entitled “On Photography and the Creative Process” and another new series entitled “LensWork Vision of the Heart”. Both of the series are completely free. I recommend you subscribe to his podcast through iTunes, but you can also download them individually from the LensWork website.

2008 Beijing Olympics Photos
Now that the Olympics are over, we can all look back at some of the best photographs to come out of Beijing. I’m going to be the first to list a gallery where I found some really great shots. If you know of other sites showing great shots like these, please let me know and I’ll update this post with more links.
