Photowalk at Fort Lauderdale Riverfront

sfcc_riverwalk_photowalk.jpgA gentleman by the name of Paulo Jordao has set up a “Photowalk” this Sunday in Fort Lauderdale by Las Olas Riverfront. Paulo says he’d like to invite all Photographers (Professional or Amateur) and all Photography Lovers to join in on this fun and inspirational adventure that is Photowalk.

A photowalk is the act of walking around with your camera and photographing your surroundings. Recently the term has become synonymous with a group of photographers (professional or amateur), with big or smaller cameras, walking in predetermined locations and then sharing their imagery. Alone or with a group, the purpose is still the same and that is to go out and shoot.

We are going to meet around 9:45am at Las Olas Riverfront (300 Southwest 1st Avenue Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312). They have a little outside water-fountain that is going to be our meeting point. Because South Florida’s weather is so unpredictable and most of our summer rain goes away as fast as it comes, I want to assure you that we will be there, no matter what… Sunny or Raining. If it’s raining we will relocate our meeting point to the first floor, close to the escalators. Paulo’s Cell# 954-270-0751

Annie Leibovitz: Women

sfcc_annieleibovitz.jpgOn Sunday, February 22nd at 1:00 pm South Florida Camera Club will be meeting at the Brevard Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida to see the Annie Leibovitz exhibit entitled “Women”.

Annie Leibovitz is one of the most celebrated female photographers. Her portraits have been appearing in magazines for over 25 years. She started as a photographer for Rolling Stone magazine and works for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Her first book, Annie Leibovitz: Photographers, was published in 1981. Eight years later, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., presented the first retrospective of her work and Annie Leibovitz: Photographs 1970-1990 was published. In October 1999, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington presented the present exhibition in conjunction with the publication of Women.

Annie Leibovitz’ portraits of women have a very wide range. She documents domestic assault, “the leading cause of injuries to American women”, with portraits of victims of domestic violence. She goes beyond the stereotypes of female beauty, but of course also presents models of beauty such as Jerry Hall, sportswomen like Marion Jones and the tennis stars Martina Navratilova and the Williams sisters. Besides models of self-esteem and strength, there are models of transgressiveness, victimhood, false consciousness, successful and unsuccessful aging.

It takes a little over two hours to get to Melbourne from Fort Lauderdale so plan your trip accordingly. You may also talk with other members of South Florida Camera Club about carpooling to this event. Please call me: Danny Hammontree if you have trouble finding the Museum. Cell# 305-905-4122.

A Step Back in Time - Curated by Shelly Katz

sfcc_2009_pbpc_step_in_time.jpgSouth Florida Camera Club has been invited by Shelly Katz and Palm Beach Photographic Centre to attend the Opening Reception and Lecture of “A Step Back in Time” on March 6th 2009 at 6:30 PM at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in Delray Beach, Florida.

A photographic exhibition of history through the eyes and cameras of America’s early photographers and photojournalist, who documented the Civil War period and the American West, featuring over fifty images from the U.S. Library of Congress. The collection has been compiled by former TIME Magazine photographer Shelly Katz and meticulously restored and reproduced on museum quality, archival, fine art paper. In the words of the Centre’s Director, Fatima Nejame, “In today’s era where photographs are often manipulated, retouched or ‘photo-shopped’, it is refreshing and comforting to view a collection of such raw beauty and honesty.” The Exhibition includes images by George N. Barnard, Matthew B. Brady, Sam A. Cooley, William J. Carpenter, Timothy H. O’Sullivan, Edward S. Curtis and others.

The exhibit presents photographs of the Civil War Period (1860-1870), and also on display are visions of the American West (1880-1915). Prints from the exhibit will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Centre’s programs.

sfcc_2009_tax_tea_party.jpgOn April 15th from 5 PM till 8 PM a Tax Day Tea Party will be held in Downtown Fort Lauderdale in front of the Federal Building at 299 East Broward Blvd.  The Tax Day Tea Party is a peaceful protest calling for the lowering of taxes and the cutting of pork.

There is also plenty of parking behind the Federal Building in parking garages.  This event is supposed to last till eight, but we will photograph until the event ends or the sun goes down.

Scott Kelby’s Second Annual Worldwide Photo Walk

sfcc_2009_photo_walk.jpgOn Saturday, July 18th at 9:00 am we will be meeting in downtown Fort Lauderdale along Las Olas Blvd. for Scott Kelby’s Second Annual Worldwide Photo Walk.

This Photowalk is being lead by South Florida Camera Club member Paulo Jordao. Many people will be attending this event including people that are not members of our awesome club. This will be a great opportunity of us to get out and photograph together and socialize with people that have the same passion we do.

We will be meeting at the Starbucks @ 350 E. Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you have any questions about this event you can contact Paulo at email: paulopics {at} comcast(.)net or cell: 954-270-0751.

Calle Ocho in Little Havana Photowalk

sfcc_2009_little_havana_photo_walk.jpgOn Sunday, September 6th at 2:00 PM South Florida Camera Club will be doing a photo walk field trip along Calle Ocho in Little Havana.

Our next photographic competition with the theme of “Street Photography” is fast approaching and many of you have told me that you don’t have anything in your portfolio that will fit this theme. Calle Ocho in Little Havana is the perfect location for us in South Florida to photograph what’s happening on the streets in Miami.

Little Havana is well known in the Americas and Europe for its social, cultural, and political activities. Its festivals, including Carnival Miami, Cultural Fridays, the Three Kings Parade and others, are televised to millions of people every year on different continents. It is also known for its landmarks, including Calle Ocho (S.W. 8 St), and its Walkway of the Stars (for famous artists and Latin personalities, including Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, and Gloria Estefan, the Cuban Memorial Boulevard, Plaza de la Cubanidad, Domino Park, the Tower Theater, Jose Marti Park, the Firestone/Walgreens Building, St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Municipio de Santiago de Cuba and others. It is undoubtedly the best known neighborhood for Cuban exiles in the world. The name “Little Havana” emerged in the 1960s as the concentration of Cubans in the area grew sharply. Little Havana is the name affixed to a sprawling neighborhood lying immediately west of downtown Miami.

We will be meeting at 2:00 PM at the McDonalds located on 14th Avenue between 8th and 9th street. We will then walk and photograph along Callo Ocho together throughout the afternoon. If you have any trouble finding the location or our group, you can call me Danny Hammontree at 305-905-4122 or Adilia Ortega at 786-543-1400.

Danny Hammontree’s Photography Exhibit

sfcc_2009_danny_hammontree.jpgOn Saturday, November 7th from 6:00 PM till 10:00 PM, Danny Hammontree will be exhibiting eighteen black and white prints from his anti-war series photographed in Miami, Washington DC and Portland, Oregon. This exhibit will take place at Kevro’s Art Bar in Delray Beach Florida.

In January of 2005 Danny began photographing anti-war protest in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. His passion quickly grew for the subject matter and this type photography, and for the next three years he traveled to Washington DC regularly to document the people that would protest against the leadership of the United States, and those that would protest against the protesters. Many of his favorite photographs from this series came from a protest in Portland, Oregon in March of 2006 which marked the three year anniversary of the war in Iraq.

Opening night of this showcase will also feature the original music of Alex Nelson, a popular local singer-songwriter. So, plan to go out for dinner on the avenue and then swing by to have a cocktail, check out the art of Danny Hammontree and the musical talents of Alex Nelson (he’ll be on stage until about 9:15). sfcc_2009_photo_mami.jpgOn Saturday, December 5th 2009 at 11:00 AM, South Florida Camera Club will be attending photo MIAMI 2009 in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Our photography club has attended this event for the past two years and it has been an incredible inspirational experience both years! I encourage everyone to make a special point of attending this amazing photography fair.

Now in its fourth year, photo MIAMI, the acclaimed contemporary international fair of photo-based art, video, and new media, returns in a new, 30,000 square foot venue at NW 34th Street and North Miami Avenue (at the former Circuit City Building) in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District and coincides with Art Basel Miami Beach.

The fair’s new location is strategically positioned in Miami’s midtown arts corridor. photo MIAMI is on the main thoroughfare for all of the major satellite fairs in Miami, as well as the Rubell Family Collection and the new warehouse for the Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz Collection, which will open that week.

Photo MIAMI 2009 Curatorial Theme:
The transformation and dissolution of societal structures worldwide has left humanity wondering, what’s next? Magic, perhaps, where mystery and creativity intersect?

Conceptual art, long dependent on historical canon, has lost sway, while the ability to imagine-and to re-imagine-has gained ground. Turning a collective gaze to the future as well as the unknown, we embrace a trinity of visual languages-photography, video and new media -as contemporary tools for defining value and meaning in this new world order. Whether appropriated from the depths of popular culture or simply beyond the reflections of mass media, photo MIAMI 2009 seeks to explore photography, video and new media-tools simultaneously commonplace and innovative in their capacity to tell our stories-as the evolving aesthetic, conceptual and imaginative change agents of the moment.

Admission Fee.
The general admission price is $20, Students and seniors are $15 and entrance for children under 12 is free. From what I have read the tickets are valid for reentry throughout the duration of the fair. If you have any trouble finding the event or our group you can contact me “Danny Hammontree” on my cell @ 305-905-4122.

SFCC Fieldtrip “The 33rd Annual Art Deco Weekend”

ON THE ROAD: ART DECO CELEBRATES THE MOTORCAR

adw2010.jpgOn Saturday, January 16th at 10:00 AM, South Florida Camera Club will be meeting on 10th and Ocean Drive for The 33rd Annual Art Deco Weekend! this is a great opportunity to photograph people and subjects surrounding the art deco festivities.

One of the hallmarks of the 1930s was its passionate love affair with new technology, particularly the technology of transportation. On the sea, ocean liners like the Normandie promoted the elegance of fast transatlantic crossings, while on the rails, streamlined trains like the 20th Century Limited provided passengers with unrivaled luxury and speed. But it is on America’s roadways that a new passion became ubiquitous: the motorcar. Art Deco Weekend 2010 celebrates the technology, design, and American spirit embodied in the open road, as Americans got behind the wheel in record numbers, and manufacturers developed more and more streamlined models for mass consumption. Art Deco Weekend 2010 also celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

The Art Deco Weekend® Festival was started in 1976 by the Miami Design Preservation League to attract visitors to Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District and to raise awareness and appreciation of the arts and culture of the Art Deco era (approx. 1925-1945).

Art Deco Weekend will feature more than 85 events, including:

  • Guided tours
  • Film series
  • Lectures
  • Antiques, art and collectibles vendors
  • Variety of food vendors
  • Musical attractions
  • Theatrical performances
  • Dance performances
  • Classic automobiles
  • Saturday morning parade
  • Dog promenade and other events

Lake Worth Street Painting Festival

sfcc_2010_event_lake_worth_street_painting_festival.jpgOn Saturday, February 20th, 2010 at 12:00 PM, South Florida Camera Club will be going to the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival. If you have any trouble finding the South Florida Camera Club clan once you get there, just give me a call at 954-667-3840.

Watch and photograph as over 400 Artists use the pavement as canvas to transform downtown Lake Worth into a temporary outdoor museum of original art and masterpiece reproductions. Watch the streets come alive as the artists transform the pavement into works of art. Continuous live music and children’s activities are also featured.

Traced back to 16th century Italy when itinerant artists would use their chalks to transform pavement into a makeshift canvas, street painting has retained its appeal through the centuries. As in ages past, crowds still gather to watch as fine works of art emerge. The “paintings” last only until the next rain, but the lively spirit and accessibility of the exhibition captivates new audiences each year and inspires lasting memories.

Downtown Lake Worth and the Greater Lake Worth Chamber of Commerce invite you to the annual Street Painting Festival, which claims bragging rights as the country’s largest. The 2-day event transforms the downtown streets with more than 200 street paintings sponsored by businesses, organizations, families and individuals, covering more area than any other festival of its kind in the U.S. Hundreds of artists converge to display their diverse talents on the asphalt – using only chalk – in styles that range from Renaissance classicism to Cubism and Pop Art. Street performers, strolling minstrels and Main stage musical entertainment add to the creative atmosphere. And of course, don’t miss the Festival Food Courts, accommodating culinary tastes and thirsts as diverse as the surrounding artwork.
