Calle Ocho in Little Havana Photowalk

sfcc_2009_little_havana_photo_walk.jpgOn Sunday, September 6th at 2:00 PM South Florida Camera Club will be doing a photo walk field trip along Calle Ocho in Little Havana.

Our next photographic competition with the theme of “Street Photography” is fast approaching and many of you have told me that you don’t have anything in your portfolio that will fit this theme. Calle Ocho in Little Havana is the perfect location for us in South Florida to photograph what’s happening on the streets in Miami.

Little Havana is well known in the Americas and Europe for its social, cultural, and political activities. Its festivals, including Carnival Miami, Cultural Fridays, the Three Kings Parade and others, are televised to millions of people every year on different continents. It is also known for its landmarks, including Calle Ocho (S.W. 8 St), and its Walkway of the Stars (for famous artists and Latin personalities, including Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, and Gloria Estefan, the Cuban Memorial Boulevard, Plaza de la Cubanidad, Domino Park, the Tower Theater, Jose Marti Park, the Firestone/Walgreens Building, St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Municipio de Santiago de Cuba and others. It is undoubtedly the best known neighborhood for Cuban exiles in the world. The name “Little Havana” emerged in the 1960s as the concentration of Cubans in the area grew sharply. Little Havana is the name affixed to a sprawling neighborhood lying immediately west of downtown Miami.

We will be meeting at 2:00 PM at the McDonalds located on 14th Avenue between 8th and 9th street. We will then walk and photograph along Callo Ocho together throughout the afternoon. If you have any trouble finding the location or our group, you can call me Danny Hammontree at 305-905-4122 or Adilia Ortega at 786-543-1400.

Gallery 101 Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

breast_cancer_awareness.jpgOn Saturday, September 26th  from 7:00 pm till 11:00 pm South Florida Camera Club member Vionette will be showing and auctioning off some of her photography artwork for the Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraider at Gallery 101 in Fort Lauderdale. I encourage everyone to come out and support Vionette at the auction and help bring awareness to this breast cancer charity.

Gallery 101 will present a NY style runway show with breast cancer survivors in their best and most outrageous pink runway outfits. Plus, a silent auction of artwork from the resident artists of Gallery 101 and other products and services will also be on auction as well. This is a great opportunity to buy some great art and contribute to a fantastic charity. Broward General Comprehensive Breast Center, opened in June 1998, offers a full spectrum of cancer care to meet the needs of the people of Broward County. Gallery 101’s goal is to present a check for $10,000 to the center.
